Thanks to Louise Olley my amazing volunteer photographer who works a an Assistant Herbarium Curator at RBGE we managed to capture Drylaw Neighborhood Centre’s trip to Holyrood Park.
One by one we went marching up the hill, actually we didn’t really race up to the top we kept stopping to look at plants and then suddenly, we all stopped!
We found a caterpillar crawling along the footpath. We knew very quickly what butterfly it would turn into because we had already learnt about the favorite food plants of caterpillars and butterflies.
1. What caterpillar did we find?
2. I am a colorful butterfly with eyes spots, when I am a caterpillar I like to feed on nettles.
I really enjoyed helping the group learn about plants that they found and sharing facts about how deadly if eaten the poisonous Foxglove can be and on the other hand how yummy the leaves of the Sheep Sorrel are. It was wonderful when one of the group members pointed at a plants that they recognized.
Some of us found it quite challenging climbing up hill but with lots of encouragement we made it.
On the way up we made up natures palette, I have now mounted their work onto a lovely piece of cardboard so they can display their masterpieces in the centre.
It was certainly touch and go as to whether we would reach the summit but we did and I have proof. Erm we may have taken over the summit little bit, that poor couple in the background.
The way down was much more relaxing for us, well more a relief on my part. We actually made it to the summit despite a few dramas along the way.
