Due to gallivanting about on holiday for a large chunk of August, I’m now having to do a month’s worth of blogs all in one go – no such thing as a free lunch. Here goes!
Thursday 2nd August saw the Glasgow Midweek Group at Kilmardinny Loch in Milngavie, a popular spot for families and dog-walkers. The task was to dig several small ponds (or bomb – craters, as we later decided was a more accurate term…they’ll be lovely once the plants grow!) as breeding places and nurseries for froglets and toadlets which otherwise make tasty morsels for the bigger fish in the main loch. We also had a huge thicket of that ever-present summertime thorn in the volunteer’s flesh, the Himalayan Balsam, to tackle. We also stopped to admire the chainsaw sculptures dotted along the path.
Monday 6th and we were back again, with a small but perfectly formed group of four. With such a small group, we were slightly alarmed to discover that the Biodiversity Officer wanted us to dig out a BIG pond – oh, about 6m by 3m…that’s a lot of digging! Fortified by a helping of Jaffa Cakes, and only slightly deterred by a torrential shower, we managed to get the pond done, and even found a little time to attack the Balsam again. Kenny even finished the day with blisters on his hands – proof of hard work!
