Hello everyone!
My name is Emily Corner and I’m the Natural Networks Trainee at Sale Water Park in Manchester.
I’m originally from Manchester, but have only been back in the area a year, after living in Scotland and studying at Edinburgh University.
Three weeks in and I’m really loving my new role, I have gone from being a Volunteer Officer at the office, working with TCV three days a week and at a bar five days a week (hold on, that doesn’t add up!), to being able to devote all my time to living and learning environmental conservation.
So far, with TCV, I have been researching local Friends groups who we will be engaging with in order to encourage a more connected local green network. I have also been job shadowing Manchester’s Senior Project Officer Ally, attending lots of meetings and site visits and learning all about the inner workings of TCV, it’s all been a massive learning curve! The majority of my previous Volunteer Officer role was undertaken with the office’s Project Officer Andy, and on Thursdays I’m continuing to help out with practical conservation tasks in and around Manchester.
As well as working with TCV, I am also working with the Manchester branch of the national programme of Community Forests, Red Rose Forest (RRF). With them I have helped at a tree planting event (one of many to come!). I have assisted Beth at RRF in delivering the Farmhouse Breakfast scheme, which is part of Breakfast Week 2015 (http://www.shakeupyourwakeup.com/content/breakfast-week) teaching kids about where there food comes from and encouraging healthy eating.
I have also been undertaking GIS work focused mainly on mapping signposting and footpath networks in the Upper Mersey Valley.
So lots of things going on and I have a diary chock-a-block with upcoming events, it’s only going to get busier, but I’m really looking forward to taking on new responsibilities, learning lots more about TCV and RRF and working with Manchester’s communities!
