The first event of our Hedgerow Hopes programme ran this Saturday 13th Sept at Eden Allotment Gardens. We were foraging for blackberries, making blackberry jam and trying other hedgerow food and drink like elderflower wine and cordial – delicious! It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and we had a good turn out at the allotments.
The Hedgerow Hopes project aims to promote, restore and enhance our species rich hedgerows by engaging local people in Hedgerow workshops. Hedgerows are important for wildlife, providing shelter and food, but also for people as they have historically acted as stock barriers, town boundaries and prevented soil erosion.
We are running two more ‘foraging the hedgerow’ workshops at the allotments and two hedgelaying activity days in Jubilee Wood over the next few months. Looking forward to them all 🙂
Speaking of allotments, here are our Best Kept Allotment’s of 2014.
1st – Richard  – his plot is absolutely full of all kinds of vegetables
2nd – Godfrey  – his plot is full of beautiful flowers and he’s grown potatoes and plums this year, and even made his own plum wine which I’ve tried and it’s awesome!
