Well, the past couple of months have been a bit of a whirl wind! Generally, I’ve been busy getting a feel for the two sites and the two communities that I’ll be working with. I’ve been attending painting clubs, camera clubs, a slightly intimidating, but very useful community council meeting and some over 60’s clubs, in order to meet some of the people who are connected to the peatlands and begin to build some lasting relationships. I’ve also been collating results from my questionnaires and now have an outline of events for this year, based on the thoughts and opinions of community members… which is fab!
I’ve also been doing a fair bit of work, learning about the curriculum for excellence (CfE), as I hope to do a bit of work with schools over the next year. I’ve been revamping the Scottish Natural Heritage document on peatland activities for schools and also attended a training course to learn the ins and outs of CfE……which was extremely useful and a lot more fun than it sounds.
This month I also helped out at the Butterfly Conservation Recorders Gathering, where I listened to some lectures, met some interesting and very knowledgeable people and signed myself up to do a spot of moth trapping. I also popped along to Harry from Buglife’s event (which was a great success) to help out and promote the work we’d be doing in Fallin over the next year.
So what’s next?
Next month I’ll be running the first event of my peatland arts project, starting up the first of my healthy walks and getting ready to run a program for a local Girl’s Brigade. I’ve also signed up to help with a butterfly transect alongside Stirling Council Rangers which I can’t wait to start. Wish me luck!
