Last weekend TCV attended the Edinburgh Mela festival at Leith Links to celebrate the last of “Our Green Places” events.
It was an amazing multicultural festival full of music, food from different parts of the world, fun activities for everyone, without forgetting our Citizen Science nature hunt! Many kids had a great time looking for species around the event and got a badge for being a Citizen Scientist for the day. Throughout the entire weekend we talked to almost 2000 people about citizen science and the surveys they can participate in.
I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who have participated in any way in the organization and delivery of “Our Green Places” events. They have been really successful and they couldn’t have gone ahead without your help.
A picture is worth a thousand words, so have a look at the following, which show some of the best moments of the summer:
During the last few weeks I’ve also been involved in the organization of a training programme that is taking place in Stirling. It includes four one day practical workshops in which the volunteers will gain basic identification skills but also learn about biological recording and surveying techniques. Following that, we are challenging them to look for five of the species learnt on the day so they can use the skills gained.
We’ve already had two training days, including wildflower and bryophytes identification. Ali Murfitt (Events Officer, PlantLife) and Julie Smith (TCV Natural Talent Apprentice, Bryophytes of Scottish Temperate Rainforests) have been fantastic sharing their knowledge and encouraging people to get out in the field. I can’t wait to see volunteers’ recording sheets completed with a good number of records!
