Before the end of term Kinlcohewe Primary School did a fantastic job finishing their John Muir Award. They achieved the award by completing a project on Loch Maree- nothing like the outdoors for inspiration
Searching high and low for creepy crawlies on Beinn Eighe NNR. Our intrepid hunters found blood-sucking parasites, un-stopable killers and giant wasps!

Oliver Moore gives us an introduction to mosses, liverworts and lichens- another world of plants many of us often ignore, but not as impenitrable as many expect.
We were lucky to have trainers from the BTO up to Kinlochewe to introduce the What’s Up upland bird project. Upland birds are woefully under-recorded- we know species such as the ring ouzel are declining but by how much?
Duncan Donald is the plant recorder for Wester Ross. A short walk from the road showed us what a rich flora Beinn Eighe has, how it has been recorded and why it’s important to record what’s around us.
This little white flower is Scurvy-grass (Cochlearia officinalis s.l. ). Before I got a picture of it, it hadn’t been recorded on Beinn Eighe since the 50’s, not because it hasn’t been there, but because nobody had bothered to note it. A great example of how little we know about upland populations, even in well trodden places such as Beinn Eighe.
