Hi! My name’s Sarah Lewington and I’m the new Natural Communities trainee at Beinn Eighe NNR. It’s is a bit of a change from the last place I lived- Alderney, one of the smaller Channel Islands and only a quarter of the size of the Beinn Eighe reserve!
In Alderney I was battling invasive Hottentot fig, here the problem is rhododendron. They have lovely big pink flowers, but unfortunately they also have a more sinister side! Rhody spreads easily from people’s gardens, so it’s important to involve local people in its management. A big part of my work this year will be raising awareness through events and volunteer sessions.
I’ll also be involved in moth and butterfly recording, children’s activities, events and guided walks, and other things on top- I’ll keep you updated throughout the year. Anyway I have to run- I have to check on some sea eagles on Loch Maree!
