Well the general vibe seems to be busy but with a smile on yer bake! (some more belfast slang for you there!) and im no different.
The pondlife workshops i ran with a few local schools best find, was a huge Water beetle, never seen anything like it. Now i know what they talk about when you swim in lakes and something nibbles at your toes!
More recently we had another community activity day at our Community Garden in Glengormley. Great success again down to leafleting and word of mouth, got the same amount of people as last time 25! yeooo! We planted some fruit trees pear, apple and plum for community produce and wild habitat enhancement. The best part was planting the wildflower seed and plugs, donated by Ecoseeds and some wildflower plug plants of Ox-eye daisy, Teasel and Red Campion from CVNI Belfast Nursery.
In the middle of the garden plan you should be able to pick out a sort of sundial shape with a circle in the middle/ The idea is that we have raised beds and a mosaic insert in the middle of the planting area. Got confirmation today from a local Primary School who are going to help design the mosaic piece 🙂
Other workshops include one we are planning with some schools near Six Mile Water Park, where we hope to put in some new interpretation panels. So i will be busy helping to design those along with a local artist. The council is keen to have one looking at biodiversity in the area as well as local heritage.
Looking forward to a workshop next week with Ulster Museum looking at Ground Beetle Identification, so il be happy to join you girls in the bug lovers world domination! Other news i have been asked to run the first Eco Summer scheme for the council in August, so have been brainstorming ideas for that and World Biodiversity Day is coming up on the 22nd May (Marine Theme) so hoping to promote some sort of event for that too!
For bug lovers, spotted these on my butterfly transect last week:
Thanks HLF you’ve made my year! 🙂
