Greetings fellow Eco-warriors!
Good to have a way of getting in touch with other like minded people.
So my placement is with Newtownabbey Councils’ Biodiversity Officer, (thats in Northern Ireland or as we say “norn niron!” for all you other bloggers out there!) i have been kept busy these past few months since i started back in January. To start with i have just been getting to grips with all the different projects that were ongoing with the council and outside groups, as well as any pending funding applications.
When discussing the projects and ideas with the Bio Officer she mentioned the small pond they had created recenly on site at the council offices.
I did my Honour Project on river beasties so this was right up my street! After careful planning and a few wellie clad trips to the pond with nets, i had 4 school groups out this week for some pond dipping madness!
Kids loved it! Was surprised loads of them had not done dipping before, so all the better to get them stuck in and loving the outdoors 🙂
I have also been managing a Community Project in a local park, where they have secured funding for a community garden. On the 10th of March we put in some chestnut paling fencing and a mixed species hedge. There were 25 people at the hedge event to help out which was great! Families, locals and quite a few doggies!
I have also been getting involved with some local projects outside of work. I think its a great way to use the skills you are learning to benefit other people and to practice what you have gained in the past few months.
I could probably write a lot more but il sign off for now.
Hello to Becky my fellow norn niron trainee! 🙂
Cheers
Rosie
