Brickhill Community Allotment

June 23, 2012 by Katherine

At last, we’ve had a sunny day on the Brickhill allotment! As the name Brickhill implies, the soil is rather heavy clay in this area – and the recent downpours have meant that for much of the last few weeks, the site has been pretty much waterlogged.

But our volunteers aren’t put off that easily!

To improve the soil, and so improve drainage, Eva is mulching the soil with a thick layer of compost .

Here, Geoffrey is putting in a trench which he then filled with compost – this should get the runner beans off to a flying start. With the warm, wet weather we’re having, it won’t be long before the plot is full of good things to eat! Everyone is welcome to join our sessions – we meet on Saturday mornings, 10 – 1, at the Brickhill allotment site on Fosters Brow – tea and biscuits are a standard feature!
