Welcome to this first blog of 2013, and what a start to the year it has been for everyone here at the Tree Life Centre! We have been very busy all round despite the varying weather and the conditions they have presented us which culminated this week with a fallen power cable onto the site restricting our access to half the centre, including our greenhouse and potting shed, so hopefully it will be repaired soon.
As you may have seen if you follow us on our Facebook page we had fun in the recent snow at the Centre with snowmen and all, and of course we still managed to do some work, thanks to the polytunnel, and general site maintence.
We have completed many orders since re-opening including a large batch for Goblin Combe, an environmental centre in North Somerset; and anthor batch of apple trees and a few extras for our friends at More Trees for Bath and North East Somerset, get in touch with them and find out where these trees are being given out this time.
Also, most of our Diploma Level 2 students payed a visit to a school near Weston-Super-Mare, Mendip Green Primary, to plant some trees and shrubs as part of our partnership with Western Power Distribution and their Tree Planting Scheme. With more outings planned in the coming weeks its always good to be able to leave the site and be involved in other active conservation projects besides our’s on-site. Also, a big batch of trees were delivered for our TCV Somerset team to plant out in the same scheme around Huish Episcopi.
Meanwhile our Level 1 Diploma students have been slogging through the health and safety module but when they can they have been involved in collecting cuttings of holly along with other volunteers, so hopefully they will be successful to help boost our stocks.
Parish Notices :-
There is a FREE Orchard Workshop event being held at out home of Grimsbury Farm this coming Saturday 2nd February which provides advice on fruit trees including planting, pruning and selecting the right trees for you. This is NOT a Tree Life Centre event but run by South Glos. Council. The event will run from 10am-Midday. Refreshments will be provided but please wear warm and suitable clothing as it probably will be/get very muddy! We will have a selection of fruit trees for sale if the workshop has wetted your appetite!
