Oh autumn where have you gone? My favourite season (don’t tell Spring I said that) seems to have been and gone in a flash as we now feel the full force of Winter on site being plunged into freezing winds and frost on the plus point Christmas is getting closer!
Anyway, on with the blog…this month’s is going to be shorter then usual, not because we haven’t been busy, far from it! It’s just we have been focusing on two main activities this month, with a little bit of festive preparation on the side!
If you’ve not visited us in a while you would notice a difference more after this month’s progress on the site redevelopment. This is due to spending a fair few hours working hard to clear round the entrance way and the area leading up to it; including cutting back the trees so the entrance can be seen from lower down the pathway. Meanwhile, inside the centre most of the public area has been cleared in readiness for the path to be laid down, with the wildflower section gone and the seed beds moved round the corner. In this area more clearing of the brambles and buckthorn has been completed to open up more areas for new bed, which are slowly being constructed, materials dependant of course! The Centre is looking so different week to week you’ll just have to pay us a visit to keep closer tabs on the progress!
As it’s the time of year to start bare rooted tree planting we have been taking a whole host of orders, around some 500 trees at least, for various groups and projects from both within TCV and outside. If you need any native tree species, especially for hedgerows then why not give us a call and see if we can be of service. We love seeing our trees going to new homes as the vast majority of them have been grown from seed or cuttings by the volunteers, who have put in a lot of time and effort into caring for them whilst they grow. Also, don’t forget we have a wide range of apple trees that can also be planted up this time of year too! However, as some of the volunteers are finding out, there is more to taking orders than just digging up the trees, there is the regular problem of trying to work out if the last stock list is still accurate so the long drawn out task of checking and double checking, then correcting ever bed’s contents as accurate as possible is not as easy as it seems!
Finally, as Christmas is fast approaching we have been making our now traditional rustic Rudolphs and this year wreaths. We have limited numbers of both but will also make them to order so why not got in touch if you are interested in buying either (or both).
