It was a day of four seasons outside the protective walls of the garden and only started to precipitate while we were packing up, phew. But, just in case, we were prepared all the same and rigged up a shelter using our newly instated willow dome to support a big tarp – was like childhood den building! Made good progress with it in just one morning:
We’ve been very busy over the last wee while getting things planted in the ground, preparing the ground for more planting and finally getting round to tidying the very overgrown herb garden! I’m sure the mint will survive…
Our onions and garlic are sprouting nicely, our beans took a while but are showing face and our peas even look like they were almost planted in a straight line…We have four different varieties of potatoes in the ground now, Casablanca, International Kidney, British Queen and Pentland Javelin and we have expanded our orchard as well, with the addition of two experimental blueberry bushes, twelve raspberry canes and a Conference pear tree, and it’s not even Christmas, although I did feel a song coming on there…
We spruced up the meadow area that gets most abuse from dogs, and people, tsk, but hopefully something will manage to surprise us all and grow into something flowery. With all this activity going on in the garden, we’re getting a few nosey visitors coming to have a look…As well as this tiny coal tit, we had some great tits as well as some greedy robins, three at once!
The willow tunnel and dome are coming along nicely and are leafing and budding away, so if we get some more sunshine like last week, they’ll be providing much needed shade in the summer – unless that was our summer!
Fingers crossed it wasn’t and we can look forward to doing more planting out in the coming weeks, give our herb garden a tidy new boost. Next on the to do list will be clearing out the compost bins and wildflower garden. Roll on next week everyone and, as always, thank you for all your hard work when you come out to the garden, it wouldn’t exist without you!
