So for all of February we have been at Easter Inch Moss in Seafield West Lothian. This is a BIG project but over the past month we have made great progress. Effective use of time has been the name of the game, staff members with chainsaw training have been brought in to bash through all the tree felling, after the chainsaw guys have done their work we (the volunteers) move in to process the trees (cut them up into smaller bits). We have then been using the processed timber to build dams in the various water channels that run through the bog, the idea is that the dams will back up the water running through the channels and raise the water level in the bog. On the ground it seems to be working, whenever we return to site we are noticing the ground is getting more and more squishy.
This is really good and important conservation work, bogs are rich, diverse and unique habitats that are also (sadly) depleting rapidly. Hopefully our work will help preserve one of Scotlands bog habitats and increase the areas biodiversity.
