Today we were at Aberlady Bay removing Sea Buckthorn from the dune system. The Sea Buckthorn was originally planted in this area to stabilise the dunes with its fast growing and extensive root system. However due to it’s resistance to salt in water and the air it thrived and has now run riot.
We were removing shrubs and bushes and digging up the roots to try and make sure it doesn’t come back, but the buckthorn doesn’t make it easy, it’s long spikey thorns made this a delicate task and the root systems added some heavy labor.
At the end of the day we all had a taste of the fabled Sea Buckthorn berries, hailed for their health giving and anti ageing qualities, they as sour as they were plentiful. Some of us took some home to try and cook with, we look forward to hearing about the results.
