Today we were at Redhall walled Garden. The jobs today were to top an access path with whin dust, and then to remove and burn some dead vegetation from the woodland next to the garden.
We began the a TCV favourite, shovelling whin dust into wheelbarrows and spreading it over the path to be compacted, there were only three tonnes to move so it didn’t take us too long to get it all moved. Once we had shifted all the whin dust one of the group began compacting it with a whacker plate. The rest of us moved in to the woodland to begin removing the dead vegetation.
The point behind removing the dead vegetation was to allow more light to reach the small plants on the forest floor and also to open up the view through woodland from the path. We used loppers and bow saws to cut it back and then we put the vegetation into tonne sacks and moved it to an open area near by where we had permission to burn it.
Today was a really good day out in the sunshine (some of us even felt the need for SUNCREAM, I know in Scotland WOW) we got a lot of work done and we got to have a fire and we topped up our tans, magic!
