Last Thursday, TCV group was working at Pittencrieff Park (known locally as “The Glen”) which is located within Dunfermline, Fife. This beautiful public park covers 76 acres and offers many recreational facilities such as greenhouses, woodlands walks and play areas for children.
During the morning, whilst wearing our wellies, we were collecting stones of different sizes in order to build weirs across the stream that flows through the park. This work required the group to go into the water in order to build the weirs. As we had good wellies our feet did not get too wet!. Although the weather was very warm, the work was not so tiring because we were able to keep cool by working in the water and under the shade of the trees. By lunchtime, we had built five weirs across the water.
In the afternoon, the group was removing the top layer of turf from a small area of grassland in order to create two small planting areas, which would later be used by school children to plant flowers. This task was carried out very well but the group had to stop to have a few more rest breaks than usual because of the warm temperatures.
After finishing this task, the group moved to another area of the park, where we would construct another weir across the water, using many large stones that we found nearby. It was good to be back in the water so that we could cool down again.
The final task of the day, required us to return to the new planting areas that we had dug earlier in the day, where we met the park ranger, who gave us wildflower seeds to scatter over the area.
We really enjoyed our time in this beautiful park and we have really made a difference. We hope to return there again to do more work. Hopefully the weather will be just the same!
