Today we were at the Hermitage of Braid LNR to finish off a long running project before its grand opening in the afternoon. The project was to create a walled garden on an area of hill side that was previously scrubland. TCV’s first involvement was about 2 years ago when we put in drainage at the foot of the hill and then later we installed the steps up the side of the garden.
This morning we only had a few small jobs to do to make the place look spick and span before the afternoons festivities. These job were some weeding around the planting beds at the foot of the hill, one planting bed needed weeded fully and another raised bed for wetland plants needed to have a waterproof membrane installed. We also wheel barrowed some stones to the top of the garden to fill in a drainage ditch.
In the afternoon it was time for the pomp and circumstance of the opening ceremony. Attending along with us were other groups of volunteers, members of the Ranger Service, officials from the Heritage Lottery Fund and press from STV and the Edinburgh Evening News. It was a nice afternoon with lots of cups of tea and lots of cake, not exactly what we’re used to here at TCV! We were all very happy to be publicly recognised for the work done at this site and it was also lovely to have the chance to return to such a big project and see it completed.
