TCV Scotland has its fingers crossed for one of its volunteers, David Meechan, from East Kilbride and a team leader with us in Glasgow, who has been nominated for a prestigious Young Scot Award. The award ceremony takes place tonight (10 April) at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow and we are hoping for a win for David in the “Environment Catetory” where he has made the final shortlist of three.
David has helped to lead several projects, including construction of an outdoor classroom in a special needs school, and helping to run a Green Gym for children with behavioural issues, allowing them to benefit from their local green spaces whilst having a positive impact on their health. He has become a team leader because of his maturity and ability to deal with other members of the group, who often have special support needs.
Recognising the value of his contribution David was nominated by Denise Milan, TCV Scotland Skills Deveopment Officer, for an award in the ‘Environment’ category. This award is given to outstanding young individuals who go beyond the norm to improve the lives of others or to better their community. There will be 11 winners on the night and one will be chosen as ‘Young Scot of the Year’.
Volunteer and nominee David, said:
“My time with TCV has been very enlightening; I have met some inspirational people who have in turn inspired me to be the best I can when it comes to being a leader. I have gained so much experience and training that I would be lost without it. I would say that most of all it has been one of the most enjoyable times of my life. I would just like to thank employees across the various offices of TCV for giving me the opportunity to prove myself and train me so that I can become the most employable person I can be.”
Denise added;
“David has made a huge contribution to our work in and around Glasgow and his enthusiasm to learn new skills and help others around him is infectious. Like our other volunteers and groups he makes a great contribution to his local community and his nomination for a Young Scot award is really well deserved. We have our fingers crossed for him tonight”.
Callum Sinclair, TCV Operations Director in Scotland said;
“We are really proud to have David volunteer with us. Him making it as a finalist tonight is testament to his efforts and hard work but is also recognition of what TCV has given in return; as well as being a great way to celebrate the efforts of all our volunteers. We know that the ceremony will be a great night for everyone and understand that David will not be attending in his fleece and wellies. Hopefully on Friday we will have a well deserved Young Scot winner with us but, regardless, we know he is a credit to himself and TCV and a role model for other volunteers.”
The awards take place tonight in Glasgow and highlights of the ceremony will be aired on STV at 9pm on 17 April.
