Today I thought I would start the blog with something new a happy van of volunteers on route shot!
Once the happy campers arrived at Heathfield Primary School we were ready to progress with previous groups work on the Wildlife Garden. We had a full van of 6 volunteers and more than enough work ahead of us. I have to say I was impressed ( I am not the only one) with the school, such an inspiration for kids to be allowed to get creative in the outdoors. Also great that there is funding for a wildlife garden to help teach kids the importance of the environment and its wildlife – as I strongly believe that kids should be taught in the elements about the importance of green spaces at a young age.
The tasks to be completed today were the early stages of a wildlife corridor; picking out tyres for recycled plant beds; and weeding and tending to previous plant beds.
A local tyre company generously donated tyres of all sizes that otherwise would have cost them to dispose of. We plan on cleaning them and stapling membrane inside so that they can be filled with soil for planting. Then hopefully we can have a day where the kids are allowed to paint and get artistic with them as with any other builds we have up our sleeves for the garden.
The final task of the day was to start the construction of our wildlife corridor. It will be split into three sections that shall be inhabited by three separate ecosystems. One will have a bird feeding station; a bug hotel; and a wildflower garden.
Once finished we set everything up for the next time we are on site and drove home to drop the volunteers off. I am very excited for all the creative possibilities for this project and you will have to keep checking for all the cool things we have in store.
