On Monday the Glasgow Mid-Week Group headed to Possil in the north of Glasgow to help Friends of Possil Park Greenspace in the meadow site at the corner of Ashfield Street and Allander Street.
Our main job was to cut back Buddleia shrubs but we also cut the lower branches from more established trees to help open up the undergrowth. A lot of the Buddleia had previously been cut back but had started to regrow (vigorously!) so we sawed and loppered our way round the site.
Although Buddleia is popular with gardeners (it is also known as the “Butterfly Bush” because it attracts butterflies in the summer), it is not native to the UK and was brought from China in the 1890s; if left to spread, Buddleia can smother and out-compete native species.
Clive on a seek and destroy mission
By the end of the day, we managed to create a good pile of branches in the skip – very satisfying!
