For the next two weeks the Midweek Groups will be working on disabled access at Belhaven Hospital Community Garden. This space comprises a circular sensory garden, a polytunnel, an orchard and raised beds. At the beginning of the project the only way to reach the circular garden, and to walk around it, was over turf, so the volunteers will be working on path construction leading to the garden and within the garden itself to facilitate wheelchair access to this lovely garden. This is an exciting project for the groups to carry out from start to finish which will make a big difference to the hospital and local community.
Work began on Tuesday with removing turf and levelling the ground. Later the path trajectory was edged with timber boards and pegs, and fabric was laid down all ready for the hardcore delivery on Wednesday morning.
Twenty tonnes of hardcore arrived on Wednesday morning! Having finished the preparation, hardcore was put down over the whole path leading to the circular garden. In the afternoon, work began timber edging the paths within the garden. The work got technical when bending the boards to follow the curve of the path! The result was very neat and set a good example for Thursday’s group to follow.
Work continued on Thursday with the volunteers continuing with the paths within the circular garden. Timber edging and laying fabric was completed along the entirety of the outer path, and hardcore put down over most of it. In another part of the community garden, volunteers worked on making the raised beds more accessible to wheelchair users by reconfiguring the layout of the area and increasing the path width between the beds. This involved a lot of emptying and refilling the beds, but the result was worth it!
We look forward to developments during the second week of this project!
