This week’s hardy Monday group headed over in the thick, icy fog to Pollok Park in Glasgow. It’s a familiar site as we have worked here before to clear the Rush and Dock and help establish a wildflower meadow in boggy grassland near the Burrell Collection.
The last time I was over with the Group was at the start of October and we enjoyed a relatively warm, sunny day; today was freezing! As ever, and undeterred by the cold, the group worked hard shifting more clumps of Rush and the remainder of the Dock.
We then planted about 300 wildflower plugs and scattered seeds across the area we had cleared. The plants chosen for the area like damp conditions and included Purple Loosestrife, Marsh Woodwort, Ragged Robin, Marsh Marigold, Water Avens, Sneezewort, Valerian and Angelica.
It’s hard to believe that the small, almost dead-looking plants we put in will hopefully grow into a beautiful display next year. To help you visualise what the area might look like I visited a great website www.floralimages.co.uk* for some photos of these beautiful plants in flower.
