It HAS been a busy few months! We have our new signpost installed and still in one piece filled with lots of news and pictures of the garden. We also managed to install it without hitting any underground services – thanks to a council employee coming out to survey the ground for anything lurking beneath…
We have green manure coming along nicely in the top bed so it can just be dug in rather than weeded out come spring just before we plant seeds for next year. Green manure stops the soil from being blown away or vital nutrients being washed away in heavy rains, a term known as leaching. It will also suppress weeds, holds the soil in place and replaces/adds important organic matter to the soil and attracts important pollinating insects if it gets to the flowering stage.
A few smaller plots have been created by using some of the toppled coping stones off the wall and weeded of more buttercups, dreaded buttercups!
We’ve also tidied out the herb garden which was becoming very choked with grasses and, yep, you guessed it, buttercups! We’ve been raking up leaves as well and storing in the black bags to make leafmould for next year – we’ve almost use dup last year’s supply as a mulch for other areas in the garden.
As the weather starts to get colder, we tried out a storm kettle for the first time with great success – proper cuppas with freshly boiled water, best enjoyed on sunny fresh autumnal mornings.
