The midweek volunteers have now been working for 6 weeks on the gardens at the Islay Centre at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. Work is almost finished and the final products should be completed in the next week or two! But first a quick update on what the volunteers have been up to in the past couple of weeks.
The final sleeper beds made their appearance last week and a mass sigh of relief could be heard from the circular saw team! A total of over 30 sleepers were used to make beds in the 3 gardens and the final sanded down products look great. A couple of sleeper benches made last week are also in place to give the residents a well earned rest.
A couple of smaller benches were also placed on the sides of some of the sleeper beds in a quiet area next to the shed in the middle garden. Paving slabs and chipped bark were placed down in between these beds to form a simple but effective path. Trellis was put along the top of the fence in the first garden in order to provide a bit more privacy for the residents. Hopefully the ivy and climbers will eventually provide a bit of cover come the Summer.
A beautiful sundial type concrete feature was started in the first garden. The circular design encompassed a large tree stump which couldn’t be removed – transforming it into an entire new feature in the garden. Hundreds of small white pebbles were placed in the wet cement to create this lovely feature.
And finally, any garden wouldn’t be complete without even more plants, trees and mulching. Although there is still a fair amount left to be done, the gardens are looking fantastic and will hopefully be completed in the next couple of weeks!
