The small area of green space at Saxon Road is a perfect opportunity to create new habitats for wildlife in an urban setting. The area has been planted with wildflowers and, while some of them have gotten off to a great start, the hardier species such as Dock are starting to crowd out the other plants. Today the volunteers worked to remove the large amounts of Dock on site. The unpredictable weather made the work a little tricky but everyone did a great job and the site is already looking much better!
Next we moved on to Victoria Park, where we planted a mixture of shade-tolerant and light-loving plants and scattered wildflower mixture along the grassy verges. Come spring these flowers will bring a splash of colour to the footpaths within the park, whilst providing an excellent source of pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies and other invertebrates.
After a hard day’s work the volunteers got the chance to pop into Fossil Grove to have a look at the remains of an ancient woodland that stood around 330 million years ago.
