The first day of October saw the Mid week volunteers at Craigmillar Jubilee Park with the task of clearing back and pruning a large stretch of Buddleia which had overgrown next to the woodland paths.
It was a large task which took up the majority of the day and involved pruning back the Buddleia well away from the path leaving a clearance of several metres at both sides. Buddleia is a very fast growing plant much loved by insects and Butterflies alike. However, it has a tendency to take over in a restricted area such as this woodland and needs annual pruning to ensure it doesn’t become too overgrown!
The final results were brilliant with huge amounts of light suddenly being able to find its way through to the woodland paths beneath allowing other shaded plants to flourish. This also ensured visitors safety when they visited the park as they were now able to see clearly round corners and more fully enjoy full use of the park. And of course after a hard day’s work, it was only natural that the volunteers would want to relax by playing in the kid’s play-park!
