Today we continued to clear the cut grass from the wildflower meadows near the Riverside car park in Pollok Park, Glasgow.
Wildflowers are adapted to poorer soil conditions so it’s important to remove the grass as it not only looks messy but, more importantly, it can increase soil fertility and encourage grasses and other invasive species, like nettles, into the area.
The group worked hard to rake the grass into large piles which was no easy task as the cuttings were wet and heavy. As you can see from the photos we heaped up the grass for collection later by Council staff.
We also sowed Yellow Rattle seeds across the meadow which should help as this wildflower is semi-parastitic on grasses.
Before we left for the day we planted some Water Forget-me-not in a wet area beside the car park at the Burrell Collection.
The trees are starting to change colour now autumn is here and Pollok Park is a beautiful area to enjoy at any time of year.
