On wednesday 18th, the mid-week volunteers went to Balgreen Primary School to help tidy up their small courtyard garden. We soon realised that this was a much larger task than first thought!
The day started with simple pruning and cutting back of overgrowing vegetation and bushes. A lot of gardening and weeding was required to tidy up the borders and raised beds that bordered the beautiful courtyard. By lunchtime the volunteers had successfully tidied up the majority of the garden including trimming of a lovely planted willow structure at the rear of the courtyard. That was the easy part!
The afternoon was spent shifting the tons of cleared and chopped vegetation from the courtyard to the back of the school where the council were to pick it up. This involved stuffing the vegetation into large ton bags before dragging it through the school corridors- not an easy task! And there was a lot more than we could have imagined from such a small garden!
But it was a job well done and the courtyard garden looks much tidier now and ready for the kids to play in it. Thanks was given generously by teachers, parents and pupils alike!
