This week we will start the big countdown of our Magic wood project with the aim of having the first stage finished and tidy by the end of the week. Besides our volunteers and volunteer leaders there will be 478 children out to help making the Magic Wood even more magic. We will create log animals and so far we came up with owls (adult and baby owls), bees, giant long and short-nosed hedgehogs, snakes, pigs, hedgepigs (half hedgehog half pig), rabbits, beavers, beaverrabbits and a “multianimal” (a log animal which changes its appearance by sitting sideways or upside down). Our long-nosed hedgehog is currently guarding the mystery tunnel whereas one of the short nosed species has moved into a private garden, is now named Tilly and – as we learned recently – is looked well after by its creators (two nursery children) as it’s getting a good portion of real log hedgehog feed every morning. A white feathered owl also moved temporarily away with its ever changing “multianimal” friend but is expected back to the Magic Wood for nesting time.
Besides making many more log animals which will expect visitors all around the woodland (look out for peaking creatures on your walks!!), we will also finish and camouflage a new wildlife spotting screen, where people can sneak up to our new bird feeding and breeding area without being seen. One can also spot deer and other mammals there – the only things one needs to bring is patience and perhaps a pair of binoculars. We will also finish our seating area with giant pencils as seats, the tree xylophone as well as our sensory path and the mystery leaf tunnel…
Come back for an update and some photos…
