Lots has happened on this site since I last ‘blogged’. With the unusually good weather of late the garden development has come on in leaps and bounds, helped by the fantastic team of Green Gym’ers I have.
First job was to turf cut a 15m x 10m area where the outdoor classroom, plastic bottle greenhouse and planters would be. It was a very cold and frosty morning when we started!
Once the turf was up we had to dig a soakaway to help drainage on the site, this meant digging a 1m square hole (1m deep too) and filling with pebbles.
Once this was done and the posts for the outdoor classroom and plastic bottle greenhouse had been put in we had to get the new surface onto the site, this involved 20 tonnes of type 1 and took us 3 days to barrow and rake.
We had a lot of left over turf so the volunteers got creative, the children now have a turf crocodile, snake and turtle to play on.
Once all the type 1 was on site we needed to use a vibrating whacker plate to flatten it all and then add whin dust on top to finish it off.
Once the new surface is down we’ll be building the plastic bottle greenouse and planters, the outdoor classroom will be completed by Glasgow Wood Recycling and then there are only a few little jobs to do and the garden will be complete. We’re hoping to have a grand opening after the easter holidays!
