At last! After weeks of lugging, toiling, barrowing, shovelling, toiling, traipsing, huffing, puffing, measuring and cutting, the labyrinth is finally finished! All 12 tonnes of aggregate have been used to fill in the pathways and it’s looking good. We had just enough weed suppressant material, and we mean just, nothing wasted and all used up to the last centimetre. In between spending whole sessions wheel barrowing, shovelling and raking, we managed to create a small fernery to one side of the pathway in the sensory area, and planted some colourful Astilbes that will hopefully relish the wet shady soil as much as the ferns will. We planted five different types of fern, some evergreen and some deciduous so the garden has some colour over the winter. Some Black Scallop Ajugas were planted to give a different splash of winter colour. This was using up the grant monies from ARISE funding we secured a few months ago. We also bought lots of bulbs with the fund as well, to brighten up the grassy bits in between the pathways of the labyrinth – a surprise to look forward to in the spring, to see what colour splashes up where. The planting tasks were a nice distraction from the labyrinth for a week!
