The Midweek Group spent 20-23 August working on path and pond creation in the Sense and Sensitivities sensory garden at Auchinstarry Marina. The gardens features stone, ceramic and willow sculptures, as well as plants interesting for their smell, sound or touch.
The team split into two, one lot to work on path creation and the other to dig a pond. It soon seemed like the path work was the smart choice, as the path makers got to watch swans and brightly decorated canal boats drift past, while remaining relatively mud free. The pond-diggers, on the other hand, got plastered from head to toe (literally) with the stickiest, clay-iest mud ever, and had to hack through the might roots of bulrushes to reach the desired depth.
There was some excitement at the delivery of the Whacker (or lightweight plate compacter, to give it its Sunday name). It proceeded to vibrate off in the direction of the canal at every opportunity, dragging the unfortunate operator with it. Tony refused to have anything to do with the devilish device, but Frank was so taken with this new toy that he almost had to be forcibly detached when there was no more Whacking to be done.
Work on the pond has also progressed well, and should be finished off this week with wetland plants put in round the edges – watch this space for an update.
