Midweek Group 31 May 2012 – 7 June 2012
Yes, it finally appeared! The Himalayan Balsam. We had been keeping an eye on 2 sites we worked on last year near Maryburgh and it wasn’t appearing (I’m sure it’s just tricking us and will appear when we least expect it!) However, to ensure we did have some work to do this summer, the Balsam at Alness decided to grow again, and boy has it appeared!!
So for the foreseeable future our Midweek’ers will be pulling out Himalayan Balsam. We are currently working on the outskirts of Alness, on the Contullich Burn at Ballachraggan. At the moment this seems a neverending task, mainly due to working in one big field of barley – which highlights more what we’ve still to do rather than what we’ve done!!
We do have a lovely view up to Cnoc Fyrish however, which features the Fyrish Monument on its summit. On the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, it was built in 1782 as a means of providing locals with employment. It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India. More info can be found on good old wikipedia.
The weather has been a bit changeable over the couple of weeks, from the need for jackets and waterproofs (as in photo above), to baring arms and needing suncream (as below).
We’re hoping for more sunny days than not though as it can get a little dreich otherwise, and it’s good to appreciate the surrounding views of Fyrish, the Cromarty Firth and The Black Isle.
