Tuesday
Tuesday we were back at the Hermitage – carrying on with the drainage of the terraces. Looking good guys!
Wednesday
Started a new project today, up at Clovenstone Primary School. Lifting concrete slabs and replacing with a bark mulch path. Also removing some large bushes to make space for ingenious (alright, downright ambitious) raised beds and a seating area. Derek and I started lifting the slabs (with my new favourite toy – a crowbar). It was really interesting lifting them as we kept finding numerous ant and woodlouse colonies, neating packed under the slabs.
Meanwhile the rest of group removed a large bush, including the roots! Cake was promised – which, after a LOT of confusion, appeared.
Thursday
Returned to Clovenstone – with a considerably smaller group – and much wetter weather than last week. Typically, although we’d order the bark mulch to be delivered sometime between 7.30 – 10 am, it arrived at about 10.15 at a similar time to the rest of the volunteers. Slight confusions. More cake appeared!
Unfortunately due to the…er…location of the school and the location of the site (in the middle of a quadrangle)…we had to spend most of the day barrowing the bark mulch from outside the school, through it and into the quadrangle – placing it back in tonne bags.
One bed was completely dug over, and I managed to re-lay the remaining slabs…..even successfully droping one on my foot :(.
So a good lot of work done – despite the weather – and I imagine you will be back there sometime soon. Or the Hermitage according to John.
Right well, that’s all from me – finally, actually leaving my VO responsibilities behind and moving on to other things. Great meeting and knowing you all, I’m sure our paths will cross again soon.
