10th and 13th March 2012 – Loch Flemington
Last Friday, and yesterday, saw the Midweek Group out at Loch Flemington to carry out some NZ Pygmy Weed control https://modafiniladviser.com/modafinil-and-weed/. This was a new experience for some, and not for others, and it was also a full bus both days so lots of people to share out the heavy carrying. Tim Dawson from SNH, who is managing the project and who we are carrying out the work for, joined us for the day on Friday, so it was great to have his input and hopefully he enjoyed his day out with us, he certainly got stuck in and was a welcome extra pair of hands.

L-R: Duncan, Tim & Rob – Rob’s handy to have around as heavy to most is as light as a feather to him!; Gillian, Mairi & Grant after successfully laying the membrane
The process for controlling the pygmyweed, as the photos suggest, is to cover it with a special membrane. This is easier said than done when it gets to deeper water and overlapping membrane, but even only after two days we’re getting the hang of it. This is a more usual project to be involved in and I think all the volunteers love that fact – it’s probably what is getting them through all the stone carrying we have to do!!
LOTS of rock carrying! Elspeth on the left; Mairi, Gillian & Aaron on the right – our smiles are hiding our “these rocks are heavy, you really want us to pose for a photo now!?” thoughts!
A decontamination process is required at the end of the day to stop the spread of the pygmyweed out of the area.
