On Tuesday we were back at Berwick Law, trying to make the most of the stone we had left. The Felpers that joined us were put to work barrowing type 1 up the hill and there was also a bit of digging to do so the archeologist was on site to supervise. Work started on the lower part of the path where a long stretch of revetment was needed. WE spilt into two groups and began working from each end. The stone we had was far from perfect but the end result was very professional looking although perhaps not as sturdy as it could have been. So we decided to add a revetment for the revetment and this seems to have resolved the problem. And so our path is taking shape – the sections between the anchor bars that were completed last week have been topped with type one and the turfs layed back around the sides and are looking distinctly path like! plently more work to do though!
Wednesday did not go quite to plan! We were supposed to be taking part in a beach clean at Port Seton, however vehicle problems prevented this and we had to cancel volunteer group for the day. We used the opportunity for a trip to the quarry to chose some much needed stone, and Anna was there to supervise it being picked up by the council truck and delivered to Berwick Law so we know we won’t have the stone trouble we did last year.
In the afternoon Rob and Lynn went to Cockenzie Primary school for an afternnon of fun and games with some of the P7 kids. We played some nature games and had a scavenger hunt. A lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon!
The grand construction works of Berwick Law continued on Thursday, with the team trying their hand again at upland path construction. The arachaeologist was on hand to scrutinise any finds, and went away with a few bones. Most likely cattle or sheep he assured us. A few more holes were dug for placing anchor bars and some massive stones were put into place, thanks to the fantastic efforts of the volunteers. By the end of the day the sun was making it’s first appearance from behind the clouds, and the path was taking shape nicely.
