“Today is a good day to bake bananas” muttered Amy in deep thought, as the elite squad stepped out at BTCV Fife primary alpha land base 2 (Falkland). A concerned glance shared between big boss man Dave and I confirmed my suspicions. She must be tired. We were here for the environment after all, baked fruit goods had no place here. How wrong I was. Little did I know, within a few hours of eye wateringly intense rodhie bashing we’d all be sat round Dave’s mercilessly efficient fire sampling the fruits of Amy’s BBQ banana bonanza.
Falkland provided the perfect set up. The team needed to polish off what was left of the Rhododendron that had been thrashed weeks before. If left in piles the acidic nature of the leaves could cause horrific damage to the woodland soil. “What to do?” the group cried, we turned to the only man we’d ever follow. Dave.
“We’ll purge it in fire” Dave whispered with a jaded ominous tone. A few uneasy looks later it was decided. Fire was the answer.
As ash rained down from the plume for crackling Rhododendrons, and the scent of gently baked bananas heavily laden with giant milk chocolate buttons filled the air, the tired, smiling faces of Fife squad, burdened with countless piles of Rhododendron became content. Rab was arguably the man of the day, dedicated to the cause and as always; a true gent. Coupled once more with Douglas’ silky sawing skills; these plants didn’t stand a chance.
A truly successful day. Thanks for the doughnuts Rab.
