Tuesday
Today we were off to Sunny Gorebridge to help out in the Community Garden. Their fence had been stolen and burned on bonfire night and we were coming to the rescue to build a nice new one. It was a lovely sunny morning although a bit cold. About half of the fence was still remaining but a little bit shakey so Fiona led a small team in making it a bit more secure with branches from the surrounding woodland. Another group set about sawing points onto the new posts so they could be driven into the ground by the third group. After a slightly shakey start by Lynn and Craig and a couple of slightly squint posts, Alan showed us how it was done and the fence began to take shape. Not content with providing a shiney new fence, Neil tidied up the edges on the strawberry patch and we started to put some new chipping down on the path aswell. By the end of the day we had driven in all the posts, screwed on the the rails and started to nail on the slats. We were even joined by a photographer from the Dalkeith Advertiser!
Wednesday
Ravelstone Woods today, to join the Rangers for a team day! The first job of the day was the dreaded path scraping. Although this time it was more extreme path scaping than usual as there was a fair amount of vegetation growing over the egdes of the path to be removed. After lunch we split into two groups, one group takled a fallen tree and the other worked their way along the path picking litter. We joined together again towards the end of the day to have a final push trimming back some overhanging branches and clearing up any remaining litter.
Thursday
Burdiehouse Burn. Today was freezing!! We had a few tasks to do today, mainly clearing out part of the burn but also cutting back some vegetation and repairing a board walk. The day had to be cut short, partly due to the bad weather, but mostly because Fiona was not happy being cold and muddy!
