Tuesday 30th August
Tuesday saw us back at beautiful Bridgend, where we had completed our previous magnificent construction project, this time to erect 2 compost storage bay structures, one beside the original project site and the other further down the main path on the left hand side. Autumn lay stretched out across the sky and was flapping her skirt tails at us in the morning, with the chilly breeze and lack of sun making the small team of six shiver. We split into two teams and spent most of the day digging eight holes for our posts to be shoved into, pausing only for a bite to eat at lunchtime and to shovel great clumps of worm-eaten compost around in some old storage bays in a distant corner of the allotments. The materials were finally delivered at 2.50 pm which was too late for us to do anything more and so we left the bulk of the work until the next day.
Wednesday 31st August
Wednesday was a little warmer and saw a full minibus of volunteers heading south towards the allotments. We split into two rather unevenly matched teams with ex-VO’s Alan and Dave showing their experience by forging ahead with the task at hand and by lunchtime they had erected a sturdy framework for the sides of the bins to be fastened to. Our group was a little slower but with Keith and Willie S. drilling the back sections into the wooden posts and myself and the other Willie occupied with tidying up the site and putting away the tools, work soon progressed and you could tell everyone was engrossed in the task because when the three o’clock ‘bell’ rang no-one rushed towards the van and we didn’t leave the site until 3.45. Tommy laughed at our groups slowness several times during the afternoon but I hope that it’s a case of perfection takes time, and this will be apparent when we come to put the finishing touches to our masterpiece of a compost bin next week.
Thursday 1st September
Thursday was spent at Butterdean Woods again, this time refilling and improving the path network. Lots of hard barrowing and tamping (by the looks of the photos) – so well done guys!
