On Tuesday we were out at the Community Woodlands making habitat piles and doing a litter pick.
We started as usual by walking around the path we got to a wooded area with plenty of fallen trees and so got to work straight away. Jim and Graham got started by chopping up some of the trees while the rest of us got to work on collecting the wood and making habitat piles. Jim and Graham managed to find a rather large tree that needed to be cut down and managed to skillfully bring it down without it landing on anyone. After a few suitable habitat piles had been formed we continued along the paths picking up litter as we went before stopping for our tea break. We then continued along the other side of the woods doing more litter picking where we discovered a way marker that we had previously hidden.
Graham and Jim quickly began to try and dig a hole for the way marker but after several minutes had to stop due to the ground being full of rubble and impossible to dig. We then headed back to the van having collected a great haul of litter. On Thursday we were up at Glen Lodge helping the “Grow in Glenburn” volunteers to turn the soil in their allotment beds. This was no mean feat as the beds were huge! We quickly got down to work digging out then turning the soil. Robert who was out for his first Thursday session since changing from the Wednesday group managed to get the water supply to the allotments working which was a massive bonus. So well done Robert!
As we approached tea time we were making excellent progress especially the group who were clearing the pathway at the top of the beds. After tea break we got right back into the work and I’m glad to say we got one of the beds finished which was a great effort by everyone involved.
Thanks to all our volunteers.
