Hi Everybody.
This Tuesday we returned to Beecraigs Country Park to carry on scything through the fir forest. We are still racing down the woods in our distinctive lanes but no-one has yet reached the end fence so the race continues, (still working on maybe some sort of prize). A slight confusion meant we left the rabbit fence for the day for fear of bringing down the wrong areas and allowing rabbits into areas they shouldnt be. Turns out its all coming down anyway so we need’nt have worried.
Luckily the weather held off today long enough to get the work done and as we left the first drops of rain fell as the clouds rolled in….
It clearly never stopped as Wednesday was a day in the rain. It was Beecraigs again. The group was split in half, with one half removing rabbit proof fence that was meant to have come down the previous day. The other half went to fell some more trees but spent most of the day clearing stumps which had been left previously. Chris is still going to come down with the chainsaw to cut down the biggest stumps but there were still quite a few that were possible without the powertool. We still had time to cut down quite a few trees afterwards. The fence was also looking a good deal more depleted by the end of the day with Rachel’s team doing a great job.
So to Thursday, and a new project at Easter Craiglockhart Hill. The local Friends society have set up a nature trail around the area and we were tasked with installing the signposts that will let the public know about each site. Its a 3 day project and foolishly we only took 5 of the total 11 signposts believing this would take most of the day. What we didn’t bank on was the skill and speed of the group that left 5 perfectly placed signposted cemented and ready within the first 2 hours.
Their punishment/reward for so roundly humiliating the VO’s with their amazingly efficient work was path scraping and gorse clearance, the gorse having been left overhanging the path after the winter snow. Most of the day was spent within ear shot of the Napier University music department so we were treated to some operatic singing and brass playing whilst working.
And that was the week that was.
