A mixed bag of projects for us this week. Tuesday saw us up Corstorphine Hill for more Spirea clearance, poor weather meant a tricky task for Kate to get the fire started, but as always, she pulled through with a mixture of ingenuity and vast quantities of meths. Having a fire enabled us to reduce the size of the large ‘habitat pile’ considerably. We’re making good progress up there and, though work stopped occasionally to seek shelter from passing hailstorms, we cleared out large amounts of Spirea. So good job guys! Special mention goes to Tim who entertained everyone with a slapstick fall when putting out the fire resulting in him being completely drenched in muddy puddle water, unfortunately no pictures available.
Wednesday was out at long term favourite, Polkemmet, planting large variety and quantity of whips. Me and Rachel getting to put their tree planting course into action with a well carried out demonstration talk. Though quite a small group, we planted well over 170 trees and removed, at final count, 17 golf balls. Not totally sure whether they were in play when removed. Working so close to the 18th green led to several pauses to both duck from incoming balls and to watch final tense putts. Lunchtime also saw Dave doing a bit of BTCV construction work on his digger and most of the group taking on the mighty Polkemmet assault course (ages 5+).
Fans of the blog will see that last Thursday was our final day at Donkeyfield so will be surprised to hear that this Thursday we were at… Donkeyfield. This time we are finished at the site, giving one last coat of paint to the fence, digging out holes for the the new sign and completely resurfacing the winding path. This was a shorter day than usual and saw us timely driving away just as the first drops of rain began to fall.
Big thanks to everyone who came out this week. To view photos of past and present projects and our volunteers in action please click here
