So here we go again attempt number two at the famous BTCV blog. On Tuesday we were at the Linwood woodlands where we were litter picking and cutting back some of the over hanging trees. We were joined by a new volunteer Robert who got along great with everyone and really enjoyed himself.
One of the main discoveries we made was a mountain of old drinks cans caged in a bush. Chris preceded to cut back the bush so that we could gain access to the cans and three full bags of litter later the area was spotless. Another discovery we made was a way marker lying at the side of the path after an extensive search we could not find the hole that it came from and decided to hide it until the next visit.
On Tuesday we took a group up Windyhill in Johnstone for a bit of a nature walk and to build some nature habitats. We were lead by ranger Derek who was full of interesting information about the plans for the future of the woods.
The only disappointing thing was the weather as we got to the top of the hill and conditions were such that we couldn’t enjoy the views. We then headed back down the hill for our tea break. After tea we headed into the woods at the bottom of the hill and started frantically chopping up branches and twigs to build ourselves a habitat for small “beasties”. It was a great day and despite the weather I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all had great fun.
Thursday we were at the Ferguslie Sports Centre to plants some bulbs we were again joined by new volunteer Robert and also another new volunteer Neil.
Our task for the day was to plant bulbs around the grassy areas in the car park and from the amount of bulbs that were available it looked like a daunting task. Eddy and Chris managed to be the unlucky ones and got to dig holes at the base of the trees which meant a lot of sweat and toil on their part but like I said at the time Green Gym is all about exercising as we all know from the warm up and cool down exercises. After a few holes being dug we were finished and we had managed to plant around 300 bulbs so well done to everyone involved.
I’d like to thank all of the volunteers this week for their invaluable help and hope to see you all again
Kerr.
