….look out for our lovely clay creations!!!!
Another great day spent up at the Garscadden Woods. As it was our last session in the woods, the Countryside Rangers had a few wee surprises in store for us. But we also did do some work, planting some wildflower plugs along the edges of the footpath which will hopefully brighten the place up a bit.
After that we headed into to the woods for some woodland skills. The first task was to get a small fire going, interestingly enough key tools for the job were cotton wool and vaseline – who would have thought it. After a few attempts we got the fire going – Ray Mears would have been proud! So with the fire on the go, the obvious thing was to get the kettle on for tea. So we all enjoyed a cuppa with the water heated by our fire. As you may expect a bag of marshmallows were then produced. However before these could be enjoyed, we had to scavenge for some hazel sticks, strip the bark from them, file them into a point and only can could we toast them on the fire but they were worth the effort.
Then we had the chance to get creative with clay. The idea was for everyone to create a small sculpture from clay, by the end of the session we had scary faces, snakes, an elephant and various fern people.
Turns out that quite a few of the volunteers have an artistic side so was nice to get the chance to see these other skills – cause I know we can dig plenty of holes!
The group then headed back to the van, enjoying the all the wildflowers along the way.
Thanks folks and see you next week,
Julie
