With the adult Green Gym packing away their tools and having one last cup of tea of the the day, the Girvan Youth Green Gym sprung into action!
The planter boxes outside their base, The Glendoune Centre, were in need of some reviving, so with the help of 14 youth (and 3 support workers) from Target Leisure we set about tackling them. The planter boxes were constructed as part of a BTCV youth project around 4 years ago!
Our first task was to remove all the litter which had gathered in the planters over the last year since the planters were last spruced up. once this was all in the bin, we began weeding out all the unwanted plants (mainly dock) and pruning back others which were beginning to take over.
Once this was all done, we topped up the planters with more compost and a layer of bark chips, which were “pure stinkin, man”. We then began planting up the boxes with various bedding plants, some pumpkin plants and a couple of morning glory which we hoped to train up the cherry trees in the centre of the boxes. All of the plants were kindly donated by Girvan Community Garden.
The group were really pleased with how the planters looked at the end of the day and have decided to keep a close eye on anyone who dares throw litter in them again!
