The first three days of this week saw us in water of one sort or another. Monday and Tuesday were spent at Queen’s park in Glasgow.
Monday was shoveling a lot of loose earth into the edge of the large pond at set places where sandbags had already been put.
Once the earth was in it was leveled to create a ramp at the edge of the pond, this will allow amphibians to exit the pond where previously they had been unable.
On Tuesday morning we went first to the nearby Maxwell Park. We took Flag Iris, Bottle Sedge, Water Forget-Me-Not and Water Mint from around the pond. The pond’s inhabitants didn’t seem to mind too much 🙂
We took the plants back to Queens Park and put them into the exposed ramp we’d built on Monday. The theory is that they will grow in and strengthen the bank and provide cover for birds and other wildlife.
Wednesday saw us travel to a different site, Garscadden Burn where we were removing Himalayan Balsam from the stream and surrounding area. Having done the same job on the site last year I can see that our efforts haven’t been in vain, there was definitely less growth than in 2009. As always there was some interesting flora and fauna to be seen.
