Weeks 3 & 4 at Blaeberryhill Park
Weeks 3 & 4 at Blaeberryhill Park with the Whitburn Intergenerational Green Gymers saw an old fence be taken down around a pocket of woodland. The fence was damaged and containing the trees so we took it down and thinned some of the trees to create a more fluid habitat and some habitat piles for wildlife. The trees looked less like prisoners now with a little more space to grow!
The volunteers got to grips with some new tools they’d never seen or used before – fencing pliers and wire cutters. All the wire and staples was removed from the fence posts using these new weapons, sorry, I mean tools, so the council could com eand take them for recycling. There were a few hold ups though thanks to a number of stubborn straining posts…
But not to be defeated the gang managed to get them out with a mixture of brain and brawn….and Kath’s van! Luckily Kath Webster had come to visit that morning to see what a Green Gym was all about and got a bit more than she bargained for! We used the towbar on her van with some rope to tease the straining post from it’s muddy grip. Job done.
The gang worked through some hideous wet windy weather which felt like it was out to get us but still managed to get all the fence and straining posts removed – even if one did have to be sawn down! Again they did a fantastic job – there were even rivers forming to hold up digging posts out as the rainwater created deep pools. Hot drinks were on hand to warm the body and soul – especially the hands! Biscuits got a bit soggy though…
