Hi all,
Diversity has certainly been on our minds here at BTCV Aberdeen lately, both with projects and with some local wildlife.
We recently had a moth workshop for the Green Gymers given at our offices by a local entomologist. We set up a trap the night before (no moths were harmed in the making of this project) and then had a show and tell the next day.
It certainly helped dispel the myth that moths are boring brown/grey creatures which spend all their time eating clothes – some of them do, but there is an amazing diversity of these often stunning creatures to be seen locally. We collected nearly forty species at the event, including some of these pretty winged things. The records were then dispatched to NESBReC to help build up a picture of what biodiversity we have in our local area. Perhaps we can make this a regular event at BTCV Aberdeen and do our bit for biological recording! In the afternoon, we turned our safety-gloved hands to some insect box building. The insect boxes will be used to replace those which were vandalised at the insect wall at Balmacassie (shame on you naughty people). As usual, the Green Gymers did a fine job. Marge, those pink gloves are just funky! The mid-week groups have been busy on the diversity front in terms of projects. We spent several days carrying out tree after care on the SSSI reserve at Rhynie where we miraculously avoided the rain. We have also starting some bridge painting (oh, the joy) at Balmacassie, where our insect boxes are destined for, and some step building at Mill of Benholm. Flip, it’s a wonder we have time for bed!!A big thank you to everyone who has been helping with all our projects recently and hope you continue to support us (there might be chocolate in it) in the future.Have a good week.
